Frequently asked questions.

Honest, specific answers to the questions diabetic mountain bikers actually ask before they trust SHRED.SAFE with their ride prep.

01Is SHRED.SAFE medical advice?

No. It is a ride-preparation and safety planning tool. It supports decisions like what to carry, when to check, where to ride, who to tell. It does not diagnose, monitor, treat, or prescribe. Always follow your diabetes team’s plan and call 999 in an emergency.

02Does it replace my CGM or glucose meter?

No. SHRED.SAFE helps you structure your decisions around the readings and context your CGM or meter already gives you. You still check, you still trust your symptoms, you still verify with a finger prick if a CGM reading doesn’t match how you feel.

03How are the carb numbers in Ride Fuel calculated?

The fuelling estimate is based on your body weight range, your medication risk context (insulin vs no hypo-risk meds), your CGM lag awareness, planned ride duration, intensity and meal timing. The output is a structured planning estimate — not a prescription. It does not replace your team’s recommendations and you should never adjust insulin based on it.

04I’m Type 1 on an insulin pump. Can I use this?

Yes. Type 1, Type 2 and LADA riders are all supported. The Profile page lets you set your specific medication, CGM and risk context. The Ride Fuel and Hypo Risk Awareness tools adjust their output based on whether you’re on insulin or other hypo-risk medications. SHRED.SAFE will not, and cannot, suggest insulin dosing — that’s strictly your team and your pump algorithm’s job.

05Where does the trail data come from?

The Trail Directory covers 43 UK venues with 134 named routes. Data is gathered from publicly available NHS information, mapping services, rider reports, and direct venue communications. Distances to A&E are road-distance estimates. Mobile signal grades reflect general patterns from multiple carrier coverage maps and rider feedback. We update the directory as we gather new information. If you spot an error, tell us.

06Does it work without phone signal?

Yes. SHRED.SAFE is a Progressive Web App with full offline support. The first time you visit on signal, the entire site caches to your device. After that, every page works offline — including the trail directory, your profile, foot care, buddy card, emergency card and ride mode. The only feature that needs live signal is Hypo Risk Awareness (because it pulls live weather data).

07What if I lose my phone with my emergency card on it?

The emergency card is designed to be screenshotted and shared as an image. The best practice: generate your card once, screenshot it, save the screenshot to your phone’s Photos, and share it with your regular riding buddy. They’ll have a copy even if your phone is lost, dead, or smashed in a crash.

08Is my health data shared with anyone?

No. Your health data — weight, medication, glucose readings, ride logs, emergency contact — lives in your browser’s local storage on your device. It is never sent to our servers, never sold, never given to advertisers, never shared with insurers or any third party. The only thing that leaves your device is what you choose to share yourself (a screenshot, a buddy note copy-pasted to a mate).

09What does the £4.99 actually pay for?

One-off lifetime Premium access unlocks: weight-aware fuel estimates, hypo risk awareness with live weather, ride pattern tracking, full per-trail glucose timelines, the emergency card generator and GPX safety overlay. The £4.99 funds the hosting, the venue data updates, the paramedic time for guide reviews, and the development time to keep building. No subscription, no recurring charge.

10What if I pay and then change my phone?

You receive your one-off access code by email after payment. Save that email. On a new device, install SHRED.SAFE as a PWA (Add to Home Screen on iOS, Install on Android), open the Premium page, paste your code, and you’re back in. The code works on any number of devices you own — lifetime means lifetime.

11How often do you update the venue data?

The directory is a living document. We update venue data whenever we gather new information — rider reports, mapping changes, venue communications, A&E service updates. Major changes (trail closures, venue moves) are pushed via the Service Worker cache so your installed PWA updates automatically next time you open it on signal.

12What if your venue data is wrong about somewhere I know well?

Tell us. Every data point in the directory is approximate by design, and we expect to be corrected by riders who know venues better than our public-data sources do. There’s an “Add a venue” form at the bottom of the trail directory page for additions, corrections and route intelligence. We read every submission.

13Is this for adults only?

SHRED.SAFE is designed for adult riders managing their own diabetes. For under-18s, the tool should only be used with a parent, guardian or diabetes team’s involvement. We don’t collect age information and there’s no age gate, but the framing, language and clinical assumptions are written for adults making their own ride decisions.

14Who reviewed the Buddy Guide?

The staged response — the “early warning · needs help now · call 999” flow your mate sees — was reviewed for clinical accuracy by a serving UK paramedic. The paramedic asked not to be named publicly but the review is genuine. The wording follows UK first-aid hypo response principles and Diabetes UK’s published guidance on supporting someone having a hypo.

15What if I want a refund?

SHRED.SAFE Premium is £4.99 lifetime. If you’ve paid and it’s not what you expected, email us within 30 days and we’ll refund you. No questions, no friction. We’d rather have an honest community of riders than money from people who feel stung.

16What’s the next venue you’re adding?

Whichever ones riders ask for. The directory has solid coverage of Wales, England and Scotland trail centres and bike parks. Gaps right now: more wild/natural ride networks in the Highlands, more of the South West, more remote sections of the Peak District. If your local riding spot isn’t in there and you think it should be, submit it through the form on the Trail Directory page.
